The prophet Samuel was instructed by God to anoint the first king of Israel (King Saul) and then later (after Saul fell from God by disobedience), Samuel was then sent to anoint David as Saul’s replacement.

Anointing of Saul as King

1 Samuel 9:15–17 (NASB95)
15 Now a day before Saul’s coming, the LORD had revealed this to Samuel saying,
16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over My people Israel; and he will deliver My people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have regarded My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
17 When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! This one shall rule over My people.”

The prophet Samuel was under specific direction from God to anoint a specific man whom God had named before Samuel ever saw Saul. As soon as Samuel saw Saul God said, “This is the man of whom I spoke to you -this man will rule over my people Israel.”

1 Samuel 10:1 (NASB95)
1 Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, kissed him and said, “Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance?

Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head to anoint him as a ruler over God’s inheritance (the nation of Israel). It is evident that the prophets were involved with selecting new civil leaders over Israel. They did hold a popular vote among citizens to elect a new leader but instead it was God who chose the leader and this leader was confirmed by the prophet who poured oil in his head. The oil represents the power of the Spirit of God and the anointing to serve as a civil leader.

1 Samuel 10:6–7 (NASB95)
6 “Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man.
7 “It shall be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you.

God provided prophetic signs which were predicted in advance by the prophet Samuel and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Saul mightily and Saul was changed into another man. After this the Spirit of God resided upon Saul and he had God’s anointing to serve as a civil leader and he was also anointed for war to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors.

This anointed remained upon Saul until such time that he disobeyed God and was rejected by God. A man who is chosen by God must be careful to obey God in every detail. Failure to do so could cause disobedient civil leaders to be rejected by God.

1 Samuel 15:23 (NASB95)
23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, And insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from being king.”

If a man is selected by God to become a civil leader then they should never take that responsibility lightly. King Saul feared humans more than God so he did not obey God’s instructions. Therefore God rejected Saul from being king.

1 Samuel 16:14 (NASB95)
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.

The Spirit of God departed from Saul and this opened the door for an evil spirit to terrorize King Saul. To have the Spirit of God depart from a man who was previously anointed is the greatest terror that can be imagined. This means that Saul was sealed up for eternal damnation and he was also turned over to demonic torment to terrorize him!

Anointing of David as King

After King Saul fell out from God by disobedience then God sent the same prophet Samuel to anoint a new King from among the sons of Jessie the Bethlehemite. David’s family was from Bethlehem which was the very city where the future Messiah was to be born – generations later.

1 Samuel 16:1–14 (NASB95)
1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
3 “You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.”
4 So Samuel did what the LORD said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?”
5 He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’S anointed is before Him.”
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
9 Next Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these.”
11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the children?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is tending the sheep.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him.

From the time that Samuel the prophet anointed David with oil – the Spirit of God came mightily upon David from that day forward. It was this same David who later became the King of all Israel. David was a warrior who destroyed all of the enemy nations that previously had oppressed Israel. When he was just a youth, David even killed a giant by the power of God (even though the giant was much larger and more highly trained in war than David himself was.

2 Samuel 22:30 (NASB95)
30 “For by You I can run upon a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.

The anointing of God came powerfully upon David so that he could defeat alien armies that greatly outnumbered David and his own troops. Under the anointing of God David could run upon a troop which could be described like how lawn mower can cut down grass. David could leap over a wall by God’s anointing so this speaks of conquering walled fortifications as if they were nothing. The anointing of God can cause normal humans to accomplish supernatural feats of strength that are normally impossible for ordinary people.

2 Samuel 22:34–35 (NASB95)
34 “He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, And sets me on my high places.
35 “He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

David was given supernatural strength so that his legs had enormous strength. David could scale steep grades effortlessly as if he had legs like a deer which can spring up (near vertical slopes) without any effort at all!

David rejoiced in the power of God that was made manifest after he was anointed by the prophet Samuel. David became a great “warrior-king” who was undefeatable due to the anointing of God upon him. God gave David anointing for battle to defeat the enemies that threatened Israel. David was so empowered by God that he could easily bend a bow made of bronze because he had supernatural strength that was beyond normal human natural strength.

Anointing of God For Strength and Wisdom

Civil leaders who operate by God’s anointing will have supernatural wisdom and strength that goes far beyond what natural humans are capable of doing. Such men depend upon the Lord who gives them wisdom to know what to do. Joseph was another example of this.

Genesis 41:25–32 (NASB95)
25 Now Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same; God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
26 “The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the dreams are one and the same.
27 “The seven lean and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind will be seven years of famine.
28 “It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: God has shown to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
29 “Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt;
30 and after them seven years of famine will come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will ravage the land.
31 “So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe.
32 “Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that the matter is determined by God, and God will quickly bring it about.

Joseph was given a gift by God to interpret dreams and give their spiritual meaning. Pharoah the King of Egypt had some dreams but no one in his palace could give the meaning of the dreams. But Joseph was known to be able to interpret dreams so he was called before the King and Joseph told Pharoah the meaning of the dreams he had. These dreams predicted a coming drought and famine that would last for seven years. This famine would be preceded by seven years of abundance.

Genesis 41:33–36 (NASB95)
33 “Now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
34 “Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers in charge of the land, and let him exact a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance.
35 “Then let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and let them guard it.
36 “Let the food become as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”

Not only was Joseph able to interpret the meaning of the dreams but Joseph also had the wisdom of God to know what to do to prepare for the coming famine. Joseph told Pharoah to collect 20% of the harvest during the time of seven years of abundance and store it away in granaries. Thus they would have the food stored which was needed to survive the seven years of famine that would follow.

Thus Joseph was anointed by God and possessed the wisdom of God and was immediately promoted to the highest position in the land of Egypt (just under the Pharoah himself).

Proverbs 18:16 (NASB95)
16 A man’s gift makes room for him And brings him before great men.

A man’s gift will make room for him and bring him before great men. This is what happened to Joseph whose gift to interpret dreams and his wisdom for administration cause Joseph to attain the highest civil leadership position in the nation of Egypt (even though he was a foreigner).

Thus the anointing of God and the wisdom of God can cause a godly man to be promoted above everyone else. Men who have the anointing of God will have great supernatural strength or great supernatural wisdom and will be able to accomplish with excellence any sort of task set before them. This is because they are operating under God’s anointing instead of only by natural strength or limited human wisdom.

Jewish Youth Given God’s Wisdom

Daniel 1:17–21 (NASB95)
17 As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams.
18 Then at the end of the days which the king had specified for presenting them, the commander of the officials presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 The king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s personal service.
20 As for every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his realm.
21 And Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king.

After Israel sinned and was destroyed for idol worship – the King of Babylon deported some of the Jewish people to serve in his court. Among these captives were Daniel and his three friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. These Jewish young men had the anointing of God upon them for wisdom that comes from God. When the King interviewed with them and asked them questions, he found them to be ten-times better than all of the magicians and conjurers found throughout his vast realm. The magicians practiced witchcraft and sorcery and consulted demons for direction. This is in great contrast to these Jewish young men who served the God of Israel and received God’s wisdom on how to deal wisely in the affairs of life. This is why the counsel given by these Jewish young men was ten-times better than any of the witchcraft nonsense put out by pagan magicians and sorcerers.

Application: We have a great need for leaders to serve in both natural civil leadership positions as well as leaders to serve in spiritual positions such as Apostles and Prophets.
